This course deals with fundamental aspects of foreign language teaching and learning. We will look at theories that try to describe and explain first and second language acquisition. The Cognitive Sciences have provided us with models that try to explain what goes on in our mind when we understand or produce language. We will also look at past and present approaches to foreign language teaching and the social and cultural background of their development. We will look at recent developments in educational policy and in European language policy that influence English language teaching.
We recommend that you attend this course in the same term as you attend the GLS Fachdidaktik.
Please note that if you are not present at the first meeting, you may lose your place in the course.
