Contrastive linguistics deals with commonalities and, especially, differences between two (or sometimes a few more) languages. Contrastive studies have been undertaken on all levels of language (phonetics/phonology, morphology/lexeme-formation, lexis, syntax) as well as in fields like pragmatics, sociolinguistics and text linguistics. This lecture course will provide an overview of contrastive linguistics by reviewing its history and its relation to other comparative approaches, by discussing its most important theoretical issues and problems as well as aspects of application, and by presenting results from a selection of contrastive analyses involving English and German.
