This seminar offers an introduction to recent developments in generative syntax. Topics to be discussed include the structure of phrases and sentences, different complementation patterns, questions, passive sentences and various other syntactic phenomena. The major aim is not only to formulate rigorous syntactic rules, but to develop an explanatory account. This means that we will also be concerned with explaining why certain constructions are ungrammatical in English and how Modern English differs from earlier stages of the language and also from other languages.
