This seminar investigates the properties and triggers of syntactic change. We will discuss a range of salient historical developments with respect to the syntax of English (e.g. regarding verb movement, argument structure, and modal auxiliaries) and consider their theoretical foundation on the basis of the assumption of Principles and Parameters. This will eventually allow us to close in on the locus of parametric variation and the factors that motivate it.
