Contents: This two-semester English course is designed to impart to the students an understanding for the structures of society and the place of language within it. The texts will be chosen from anthropology's extensive knowledge of the human condition and will be used for reading and comprehension, English language analysis and vocabulary, as well as for discussion of both the English language and the contents of the texts. Anthropology is the broad study of humans and human cultures throughout the world and throughout history and prehistory. It is part natural science, part social science, and part humanistic study. A knowledge of anthropology can help prepare students for a number of professional activities, for example in the fields of international affairs, environmental protection, social service, education, and historic preservation. During the two semesters we will look at various aspects of culture, such as - the relationship beween culture and behaviour - the role of biology - language and sociocultural systems - subsistence activities (foraging and domestication) - exchange and control in economic systems - marriage, family and residence - kinship and descent - gender relations - the organisation of political systems - social inequality and stratification - relations with the supernatural - personality formation and the life cycle - the changing human world and the survival of indigenous peoples
